Cold as ICE
On January 20th, 2025, President Donald Trump took office. In his Inaugural Address, he spoke, "From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer. During every single day of the Trump administration, I will, very simply, put America first." At a surface level, this could sound like a positive outlook for all people in America. This was not then truth for everyone who was physically inside of the United States, however. Following his Inauguration, his administration wasted no time taking action. Since then, massive amounts of deportations have taken place in a swift and harsh fashion, with both sides of the political aisle at odds with one another. According to CNN, "Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deported nearly 200,000 people in the first seven months of President Donald Trump's administration, according to a senior Homeland Security official, putting the federal agency on track for its highest rate of removals in at least a decade but still short of the administration's stated deportation target." After taking a closer look at exactly who was being deported and why, it seems that there is an increase in deportations for minor offenses. According to The Marshall Project,
"We hear people pulled over for minor reasons, like a broken blinker, crossing the yellow line, or the tint is too dark on windows," said Paul R. Chavez, director of litigation and advocacy for Americans for Immigrant Justice, a Miami-based nonprofit. "People are arrested for those very minor things, brought to jail, fingerprinted, and then handed over to ICE." ( Source)
Following these recent actions, filmmakers Sam and David Cutler-Kreutz created a short film titled, A Lien, which was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 2025 Academy Awards. Without giving anything away, I would highly recommend watching this short film, as it gives a brilliant glimpse into the world we live in with a focus on immigration in the United States of America.
